UCC to establish Traditional Dance Archive - 20 January 2003
The Music Department at University College Cork is to establish a Traditional Dance Archive. The Archive will contain material relating to the history of Irish dance. Much of this material is ephemeral in nature (posters, brochures, programmes) which is often lost or destroyed before its significance is realised.
The Archive which will be housed in the Music Building, Sunday's Well Road, was officially opened on Friday, 17 January 2003 by Mr Bill Whelan (Riverdance Composer).
“This exciting new resource along with the long-established Traditional Music Archive will be a valuable research facility for those interested in studying aspects of the traditional culture of Ireland” said Professor David Cox, Head of UCC's Music Department.
The Music Department has been fortunate to secure the services of the distinguished historian of Irish Dance, Dr John Cullinane, to act as the Archivist. Dr Cullinane has published several important books on Irish dance, including Irish Dancing in North America, Irish Dancing Costumes, and a two-volume History of Irish Dancing in Ireland, England, Scotland, America, New Zealand and Australia. The Archive will house the Cullinane Archive Collection, the most extensive private collection of materials relating to Irish dance in the country.
The Department acknowledges the assistance of the American Ireland Funds and the Faculty of Arts, UCC in giving financial support to this project.
